McKenney & Hall Portraits

You are cordially invited to attend a Program and Exhibition of the McKenney & Hall Native American Lithograph Portraits from the Michilimackinac Historical Society Collection on Thursday, August 29 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Hessel School House.

Thomas L. McKenney was the Superintendent of Indian Affairs at the time of President Andrew Jackson’s endorsement of the Indian Removal Act in 1830. He witnessed the mass displacement of Native American tribes from their homelands. Together with James Hall, McKenney initiated a project to document the likeness and biographies of 125 Native American chiefs, orators and translators who engaged in territorial negotiations with the U.S. Government during this time. The project was titled “History of the Indian Tribes of North America” and the Michilimackinac Historical Society has a complete set that will be featured in the new Straits Cultural Center in St. Ignace.

Come enjoy complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and light snacks while you view the artwork prior to the presentation.
Hear updates about the Straits Cultural Center construction progress!

Door Prizes include: McKenney & Hall notecards, one McKenney & Hall framed portrait, and the book “Thomas L. McKenney: Architect of America’s Early Indian Policy: 1816-1830” by Herman J. Viola.

This event is FREE and open to the public. No reservations are required to attend.
