Infections can be fatal if neglected. Pockets of Blasto infections have been reported across the USA\, to include the Eastern Upper Peninsula. It is likely that higher numbers of Blasto infections have been reported in recent years due to increased awareness\, as well as from human encroachment into areas where the fungus naturally grows. Learn about the signs\, symptoms and treatment from a panel of experts.  No fee. DESCRIPTION:The trip around Lake Superior is well known for rugged scenic beauty on the grandest scale\, but there is a much smaller type of beauty hiding in the bogs\, forests\, rocky cliffs\, and dunes of this great lake: native orchids. Join Steve Baker Monday\, January 27\, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Avery Arts & Nature Learning Center – Hessel School House for a presentation on these special flowers. Mr. Baker will provide stunning photos he took of orchids as traveled around Lake Superior. His presentation will include photos of national and provincial parks where he discovered Sparrow’s Egg Ladies Slippers\, Purple Fringed Orchids\, and Rose Pogonia. His presentation will cover 36 species of orchids and include images of waterfalls\, scenic vistas\, and the grandeur of Lake Superior. \nThe program is free of charge. DESCRIPTION:Hessel School House and the Avery Arts & Nature Learning Center will be one location for the Holiday Art Tour on Saturday\, December 14\, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Photographer Carl TerHaar will be here from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm to discuss his work with the public\, and his work will be on display all day. Dressed in festive costume\, Pat Wilson will be demonstrating the art of the spinning wheel\, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Mary Welter will display hand-crafted jewelry and Christmas tree ornaments\, Paul Rossi’s nature photography will be on display\, and Mr. Rossi will be present to discuss his work from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. We will have a craft table for children to make take-home ornaments\, while supplies last.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a meeting focusing on the impact of Great Lakes water levels Tuesday\, November 5\, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hessel School House. Elliot Nelson\, instructor for Michigan Sea Grant and MSU Extension\, will convey details provided by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service. He will address how water levels are calculated\, future predictions\, and briefly touch on a project entitled Great Lakes One Waters (GLOW)\, a program that promotes resilience in infrastructure\, economics\, and recreation\, in the face of extreme weather events. \nMembers of the public interested in the impact of Great Lakes water levels are encouraged to attend. Mr. Nelson will spend approximately 35 minutes presenting facts on why lake levels change\, long-term processes\, and community impacts.
