DESCRIPTION:The System of Assimilation: History of Indian Boarding Schools \nThe Indian Boarding Schools were a nation wide effort to eradicate Native American language\, culture\, traditions and beliefs under federal policy. Native children from Michigan attended these schools throughout the country\, with the majority of them going to one of the five schools in Michigan. The Holy Childhood of Jesus Indian boarding school in Harbor Springs was one of the last to close its doors in the country\, just 40 years ago. During this presentation\, Eric Hemenway\, Director of Repatriation\, Archives and Records for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians\, will discuss the creation of the school system and the impacts it has had on tribal communities. \nPresentation: $10 per person\nSpace is limited. He is the Director of Repatriation\, Archives and Records for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indian\, a federally recognized tribe in northern Michigan. Eric works to collect and preserve historical information for LTBB Odawa. That information is used to support the LTBB government and create educational materials on Odawa history\, such as: exhibits\, signage\, publications\, presentations\, curriculums and media. Eric has worked on numerous repatriations of native\, human remains under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). He is a former member of the NAGPRA Review Committee and currently sits on boards for the Michigan Historical Commission and Little Traverse Conservancy. \n

DESCRIPTION:Come experience the beauty of winter in new and deeply familiar ways with the practice of forest bathing.  Different then other nature connection experiences such as hiking and birdwatching\, forest bathing follows the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku which invites you to slow down and mindfully connect with nature through all of your senses. Give your body and mind a chance to rest and restore while taking in the subtleties and wonder of nature. Your experience will include a guided sensory awakening meditation followed by a series of explorational invitations and conclude with time for sharing around a campfire and tea. \nThe walk will take place outside in nature so please dress appropriately for the conditions. Maureen Stine\, will guide you through the basics of ice fishing from learning how to set a tip up and what to do when the flag goes up\, using an auger\, understanding a lake map\, choosing tackle for perch and panfish vs. tackle for walleye and pike\, ice safety and more. \nClass will start at the Hessel School House for a bit of training before heading out on the ice. Everything you need to ice fish is included. Since this event is held on a Michigan Free fishing weekend\, a fishing license for participants is not required making it the perfect time to try your hand at ice fishing and possibly fall in love with a new winter activity.
