Infections can be fatal if neglected. Pockets of Blasto infections have been reported across the USA\, to include the Eastern Upper Peninsula. It is likely that higher numbers of Blasto infections have been reported in recent years due to increased awareness\, as well as from human encroachment into areas where the fungus naturally grows. SUMMARY:Bim Willow Furniture Making Class
DESCRIPTION:Make a Les Cheneaux memory! Instructor Bim Willow will teach the basics of building with natural materials. Many of the designs offered are historical Americana. Completed projects will be ready to take home within the times estimated which are based on NO prior building experience! Students are required to bring a hammer (8 oz is best for willow working & 6 oz to build frame)\, and a pair of pruners. A limited supply of loppers and wire cutters will be available\, bring them if you have them. If you have your own pair of safety glasses\, please bring them. \nThis class takes place on Friday\, July 29th and Saturday\, July 30th. Each day is split into two sessions\, depending on which item you are making. Morning session is 9 AM to Noon\, and the afternoon session is 1-6 PM. Maximum 30 students in the morning sessions and 20 in the afternoon sessions. \nAll projects must be booked and paid for in advance\, no later than three days prior to the class so that the appropriate materials can be collected. SUMMARY:POND SCUM: The Good\, The Bad\, and The Ugly About Algae
DESCRIPTION:Do you use products from algae every day? Most people immediately say\, “No Way”! This presentation will change your answer. Tom Dempster will convince you that everyone uses at least one product from algae every day. You’ll also learn about a variety of grocery store items that contain ingredients from algae including your favorite foods and cosmetics\, as well as health and home maintenance products. In addition to the benefits of algae\, we will discuss many of the bad (and ugly) impacts ranging from green pools and lakes to toxins in shellfish and drinking water. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlgae are very diverse and robust organisms that may be found in every habitat on Earth. Scientists are hard at work trying to identify the good ones and discover environmentally friendly way to eliminate the bad ones. We’ll take a look at modern algae farming to produce good species\, as well as current approaches to reduce the harmful effects of algae. \nThis FREE presentation is open to the public.
