SUMMARY:WRITERS WORKSHOP: "Whodunnit?" isn't the only question
DESCRIPTION:In the beginning\, there was the mystery. Both Edgar Allen Poe’s M. Dupin and Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes had the ability to see connections that others missed and thus solve criminal cases. But even in these first detective stories\, other things were already important: Poe devotedly described the city of Paris (which he never knew personally)\, and Doyle developed the character Sherlock Holmes in such a multifaceted way that it is still taken up by authors today (Beate Baum being one of them). \nToday\, the genre is one of the most popular in the world. So just constructing a tricky mystery is less enough than ever before. When it comes to good\, successful crime fiction\, it’s also about interesting places\, a convincing social situation\, and\, most important: the characters in the book need to be true to life. Plus\, of course\, never to be forgotten: the language\, the style. \nBeate Baum’s first crime novel came out 2001. She has been praised as one of Germany’s best crime fiction writers. To date\, 15 crime novels (also under her alias Victoria Bertrams) and a book of short stories (You can find the English The High School Reunion in the Goliad Review 1.2\, Fall 2018) have been published. In this workshop she will speak about the necessity and limits of plotting\, the approach to the right setting and interesting topics\, but you will also learn how to develop characters which work and receive critical feedback upon your writing. \nWorkshop Fee: $175. (Includes lunch both days) \nTo register\, call 906-484-1333 or register online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/626565864367 \nBeate Baum Bio \nBeate Baum holds a master’s degree in Comparative Literature has been praised as one of Germany’s best crime fiction writers. To date\, 15 crime novels (also under her alias Victoria Bertrams) and a book of short stories\, The High School Reunion\, have been published. Prior to writing fiction\, Baum worked as a freelance travel writer\, focusing mainly on Great Britain\, Ireland\, and the USA for over 20 years. Baum was born in Dortmund\, Germany\, and now resides in Dresden.  \n  \n  \n

This event is free and open to the public\, but pre-registration is required for planning purposes. \nCome enjoy a meaningful\, family-friendly hour of storytelling\, reflection\, and community with this heartfelt celebration of heritage and wisdom. \nTo save your seat(s)\, call 906-484-1333 or register online at \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nAanii. Boozhoo.\nHello. \nIshpiming Migizi Kwe Nidizhinikaaz\nI am Julie Buchholtz or High Flying Eagle Woman. \nGnoozhekaaning Nindonjibaa\nI come from the Place of the Pike. \nMigizi Nidoodehm\nI am Eagle clan. \nI am fortunate to live along the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I feel the most grounded when I am immersed in nature\, especially when I stand on the earth where my ancestors walked before me. I am a proud member of the Bay Mills Tribe of Chippewa Indians. \nMy inaugural book\, Who Am I\, was published by Sleeping Bear Press/Cherry Lake Publishing and selected as a 2021 Own Voices/Own Stories Winner. Who Am I took me on a journey of self discovery\, a coming home of sorts to my native roots. It is about connection to one another and to Mother Earth. Little brown-skinned girl asks her mama a question that we often ask ourselves\, “Who am I?” Mama pulls her girl close and explains how she is connected to Mother Earth including the plants\, the organisms\, and the animals that inhabit Mother Earth. In the end\, the little brown-skinned girl understands her significance and that she isn’t so little after all. \nMy second book\, Mama’s Song serves as a prequel to Who Am I and led me further down the path of embracing my native heritage. It tells the story of the birth of the little brown-skinned baby. Mama has never felt such love before and thanks the Creator for such a gift. Mama’s Song is all about mama’s wish for her daughter to live the “good life” or mino bimaadiziwin. Readers are introduced to the Seven Grandfather Teachings of Wisdom\, Love\, Respect\, Courage\, Honesty\, Humility\, and Truth.
