DESCRIPTION:In the beginning\, there was the mystery. Both Edgar Allen Poe’s M. Dupin and Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes had the ability to see connections that others missed and thus solve criminal cases. But even in these first detective stories\, other things were already important: Poe devotedly described the city of Paris (which he never knew personally)\, and Doyle developed the character Sherlock Holmes in such a multifaceted way that it is still taken up by authors today (Beate Baum being one of them). \nToday\, the genre is one of the most popular in the world. So just constructing a tricky mystery is less enough than ever before. When it comes to good\, successful crime fiction\, it’s also about interesting places\, a convincing social situation\, and\, most important: the characters in the book need to be true to life. Plus\, of course\, never to be forgotten: the language\, the style. \nBeate Baum’s first crime novel came out 2001. She has been praised as one of Germany’s best crime fiction writers. To date\, 15 crime novels (also under her alias Victoria Bertrams) and a book of short stories (You can find the English The High School Reunion in the Goliad Review 1.2\, Fall 2018) have been published. In this workshop she will speak about the necessity and limits of plotting\, the approach to the right setting and interesting topics\, but you will also learn how to develop characters which work and receive critical feedback upon your writing.  \nWorkshop Fee: $175. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and reception with author\, artist and educator Cindy Hunter Morgan on Tuesday\, June 27 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Hessel School House. Enjoy readings from Cindy’s written works. Light refreshments will be provided. A donation at the door is appreciated. \nCindy is the author of Far Company (Wayne State University Press\, May 2022) and Harborless (Wayne State University Press)\, which was a 2018 Michigan Notable Book and the winner of the 2017 Moveen Prize in Poetry. She also is the author of two chapbooks\, Apple Season (Midwest Writing Center Chapbook Award\, 2012) and The Sultan\, The Skater\, The Bicycle Maker (Ledge Press Chapbook Award\, 2011). She has taught poetry\, creative writing\, and book arts at Michigan State University for several years and now heads up communications for Michigan State University Libraries. She is a co-founder of the MSU Filmetry Festival\, an annual event showcasing short films adapted from poems\, and she leads various poetry workshops and book arts workshops. \nSupport for this program provided in part by the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation\, the Michigan Arts & Culture Council\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n

We will talk about the history of birds in art\, such as John James Audubon’s Birds of America\, but will also explore how birds have been used to convey ideas\, themes and even hidden messages in everything from modern films\, such as Twilight\, to the art works of Hieronymus Bosch and Diego Rivera. \nNo fee to attend.
