DESCRIPTION:Drawing 10\n \nDrawing 101 is designed for beginner artists who have an interest in learning how to draw or sketch — or simply want to improve their skills. It covers the tools you’ll need to draw and also provides plenty of exercises to practice drawing using different techniques and styles. It also covers drawing people\, places\, and objects. \nDuring this two session workshop you will learn about the tools used to draw\, values\, shading\, textures and how to create them\, and incorporate them to draw people\, landscapes\, animals\, flowers and trees. You will also have the opportunity to share your amazing drawing creations in class to receive useful feedback. While you won’t walk away a master artist after you’ve finish the workshop\, you will have the knowledge and training you need to continue to draw and bring the scenes you see in your daily life to paper. \nThis class is geared to adults but teens are welcome to attend. Materials are included\, but feel free to bring your own supplies if you like. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nKaren Mazzoline is a newly retired art/music teacher from the Public Schools of Petoskey. DESCRIPTION:Rag rug making is a centuries old craft with unlimited opportunities for experimentation and self-expression. The tactile quality of simple loom weaving is particularly aesthetic and creative. In this class\, Cheryl Gordon you will provide each student with a loom\, teach them how to prepare a variety of “rag” scrap fabrics for a custom weaving experience\, and teach them how to weave a beautiful and functional rug approximately 30″ x 45″ in size. During inclement weather they will take place in the assembly room of the school house. Class size is limited to 20 people. \nThe class is open to anyone\, no experience required. $10 per class. To register for one or more classes\, please call 906-484-1333 to be added to the schedule. Payment will be accepted at the door only. \nQigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a five thousand year old approach to healing in Traditional Chinese Medicine\, with literally hundreds of different styles. In this class we will focus on two different movement forms and will emphasize working with the mind along with the gentle flowing movements of the body to create a deeply relaxed and calm state. This in itself is a healing experience. We will learn about Qi and how it works in the body\, and students will have a very direct experience of feeling and working with qi\, or the life force\, that animates everything in the universe. \nThe instructor\, Bill McMillan\, is a retired psychotherapist and has been teaching Yuan Gong Qigong for the past twelve years to all kinds of students. From Cancer survivors to high school students\, veterans and just regular people\, this method of qigong is easily accessible and can be beneficial for almost anyone. \n  \n  \n\n \n\n\n\n  \nAbout the Instructor \nBill McMillan and his family have been summer residents of Les Cheneaux for five generations. \nBill has completed Level Six and has been teaching in various settings for many years now. His primary focus has been teaching classes to Cancer survivors and family members\, but he has also taught in many other settings\, including to high school students\, veterans\, seniors and the general public. He is currently teaching three classes in Santa Barbara – The Breast Cancer Resource Center\, Casa Dorinda Retirement Community\, and a class for family members\, caregivers and others living with a chronic illness. \nBill is a retired Marriage and Family Therapist with over twenty years experience working with adults\, adolescents\, couples and veterans\, with a general focus on trauma\, grief and recovery. He has had a long standing Buddhist practice and brings all of this experience to his teaching of Yuan Gong and Ren Xue. \n

During inclement weather they will take place in the assembly room of the school house. Class size is limited to 20 people. \nThe class is open to anyone\, no experience required. $10 per class. Payment will be accepted at the door only. \nQigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a five thousand year old approach to healing in Traditional Chinese Medicine\, with literally hundreds of different styles. In this class we will focus on two different movement forms and will emphasize working with the mind along with the gentle flowing movements of the body to create a deeply relaxed and calm state. This in itself is a healing experience. We will learn about Qi and how it works in the body\, and students will have a very direct experience of feeling and working with qi\, or the life force\, that animates everything in the universe. \nThe instructor\, Bill McMillan\, is a retired psychotherapist and has been teaching Yuan Gong Qigong for the past twelve years to all kinds of students. From Cancer survivors to high school students\, veterans and just regular people\, this method of qigong is easily accessible and can be beneficial for almost anyone. \n  \n  \n\n \n\n\n\n  \nAbout the Instructor \nBill McMillan and his family have been summer residents of Les Cheneaux for five generations. \nBill has completed Level Six and has been teaching in various settings for many years now. His primary focus has been teaching classes to Cancer survivors and family members\, but he has also taught in many other settings\, including to high school students\, veterans\, seniors and the general public. He is currently teaching three classes in Santa Barbara – The Breast Cancer Resource Center\, Casa Dorinda Retirement Community\, and a class for family members\, caregivers and others living with a chronic illness. \nBill is a retired Marriage and Family Therapist with over twenty years experience working with adults\, adolescents\, couples and veterans\, with a general focus on trauma\, grief and recovery. He has had a long standing Buddhist practice and brings all of this experience to his teaching of Yuan Gong and Ren Xue. \n

SUMMARY:Intro to Foraging Wild Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Mushroom foraging is a becoming a popular pursuit in Michigan. Come learn about the biology and key features of mushrooms and what to look for when identifying these friendly fungi. Avid mushroom enthusiast Bonni Thoresen will cover the many edible mushrooms commonly found in Michigan so you can feel more confident in identifying wild mushrooms you might come across on a hike\, in your own backyard\, or at your favorite farmers market. Participants are encouraged to bring fungi specimens. Please harvest the entire mushroom\, dug out of soil\, duff or wood. Transport them in paper bags or loosely wrapped in waxed paper—do not use plastic bags that promote rotting. \nBonni will present a colorful PowerPoint on mushrooms of Northern Michigan including many edible species. However\, she advises no one should eat any fungus that does not have solid identification verified by an expert. This program is a starting point and serious foragers would have to put in a lot time and study to really know the kingdom of fungi! \nClass size is limited. SDMS offered a lot of educational opportunities but the region is very arid and mushrooming can be limited. The greatest factor in furthering interest in mycology was inheriting her mother’s cottage near DeTour. She spent 5 months there studying EUP fungi in 2003 followed by annual visits since then. Bonni retired from 40 years of nursing in 2018.

To catch a sight of the lights is to witness something so surreal\, so beautiful that it seems to border on the supernatural. Come celebrate this magnificent phenomenon in art\, observation and photography during the Northern Lights Weekend\, September 8 & 9\, 2023 at the Hessel School House in Hessel\, Michigan.  \nCREATE the Northern Lights with Pastels  \nFriday\, September 8 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nThe northern lights (aurora borealis) are a breathtaking atmospheric phenomenon that people travel great distances to witness. The beautiful dancing lights have captivated people for millennia. In this evening art event\, participants will create their own version of the majestic lights using pastels on black paper. Karen Mazzoline will provide instruction on creating this magical work of art in pastels. No prior experience with pastels is required. \nSeating for the art class is limited. SUMMARY:Cancelled-Fall Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Come experience the transformative energy and beauty of fall with the practice of forest bathing. Different then other nature connection experiences such as hiking and birdwatching\, forest bathing follows the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku which invites you to slow down and mindfully connect with nature through all of your senses. Give your body and mind a chance to rest and restore while taking in the subtleties and wonder of nature. Your experience will include a guided sensory awakening meditation followed by a series of explorational invitations and conclude with time for sharing around a campfire and tea. \nThe walk will take place outside in nature so please dress appropriately for the conditions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own portable chair or stool to sit on during the meditation. Class Fee: $35.00.
