SUMMARY:The Art of Erasure
DESCRIPTION:Poetry depends on compression and distillation\, and it succeeds when it makes (and shares) discoveries and surprises. These surprises often come by way of metaphor. How do we free ourselves to find fresh and surprising metaphors and make wild (but effective) connections between things in this world that have not previously been connected? How do we begin to think like a poet? In this workshop\, we’ll look to a fusion of visual art and poetry to begin to think – and see – like poets. Using found pages of text (supplied)\, participants will create their own erasures and leave with their own visual art – and their own poems. \nSpecial Guest Instructor: Cindy Hunter Morgan \nClass Fee: $50.00 per person \nPre-registration is required for this class. \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549602534977 \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Art of the Letter
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we’ll read examples of the epistle – poems written as letters to others – and then write our own letter poems or letter prose poems. The epistle allows a writer to engage in something that feels like a private exchange. The result can be delightful for both writer and reader. Epistolary poems feel intimate. When we read them we feel like we’re eavesdropping. Pre-registration for this class is required. \nNote: Participants might consider using the poem they begin in this workshop as content for the artist’s book we’ll make in a later workshop. \nClass Fee: $35.00 \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549655633797 \n  \n  \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:CLIMATE CHANGE: Exploring the facts and future with Dr. Knute Nadelhoffer
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is more than rising temperatures\, precipitation changes\, and extreme weather events. Scientific studies prove that climate change has already started disrupting agriculture and forestry\, shifting wildlife populations\, and causing many emerging human health issues. These impacts result in increased insurance rates\, skyrocketing energy and food costs\, and economic consequences for business and tourism. Knute Nadelhoffer\, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan\, will discuss the implications of climate change based on scientific studies and give you a glimpse of how it may affect you and our environment in the future. \nThanks to funding from the Americana Foundation and the Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District this presentation is being offered free of charge. Donations at the door and pre-registration is appreciated. \nPlease reserve your seat online. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549741911857 \n  \n  \n \n

It also covers drawing people\, places\, and objects. \nDuring this two session workshop you will learn about the tools used to draw\, values\, shading\, textures and how to create them\, and incorporate them to draw people\, landscapes\, animals\, flowers and trees. You will also have the opportunity to share your amazing drawing creations in class to receive useful feedback. While you won’t walk away a master artist after you’ve finish the workshop\, you will have the knowledge and training you need to continue to draw and bring the scenes you see in your daily life to paper. \nThis class is geared to adults but teens are welcome to attend. Materials are included\, but feel free to bring your own supplies if you like. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR \nKaren Mazzoline is a newly retired art/music teacher from the Public Schools of Petoskey. She has lived in northern Michigan since 1995 and considers this area the “best place to be”! Karen’s passion for drawing started when she was young and developed her skills through college\, post-graduate classes\, and personal experimentation. Mrs. Mazzoline’s approach to teaching this class is simple: she will give you the basic tools to develop and strengthen your drawing skill set and will encourage and support you through the artistic process!
