SUMMARY:Cisco of Les Cheneaux and Their Role in Lake Huron Cisco Restoration
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 2 from 2:30 – 4:30 PM fisheries biologist Dr. Kevin McDonnell from the US Fish and Wildlife Service will discuss the biology\, history\, and future of Cisco in Lake Huron. Cisco (also known as lake herring) were once the most abundant pelagic fish throughout the Great lakes. Unfortunately Cisco have largely been extirpated from the main basin of Lake Huron due to overexploitation\, habitat degradation\, and invasive species. Despite their regional declines\, the Les Cheneaux Islands remain home to several populations of Cisco to this day. In this interactive lecture\, we’ll discuss the Les Cheneaux population of Cisco and the important role these fish play in a larger restoration story in Lake Huron. This presentation will follow a lecture format with ample opportunities to ask questions and discuss fish and fisheries. Admission is $10 at the door. To reserve your seat\, please call Hessel School House at 906-484-1333.

SUMMARY:The Art of Erasure
DESCRIPTION:Poetry depends on compression and distillation\, and it succeeds when it makes (and shares) discoveries and surprises. These surprises often come by way of metaphor. How do we free ourselves to find fresh and surprising metaphors and make wild (but effective) connections between things in this world that have not previously been connected? How do we begin to think like a poet? In this workshop\, we’ll look to a fusion of visual art and poetry to begin to think – and see – like poets. Using found pages of text (supplied)\, participants will create their own erasures and leave with their own visual art – and their own poems. \nSpecial Guest Instructor: Cindy Hunter Morgan \nClass Fee: $50.00 per person \nPre-registration is required for this class. \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549602534977 \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:History & Word Play: Mixing the Previously Unmixed to Cook New Poems
DESCRIPTION:We know about the magic of salt\, fat\, acid\, and heat in the kitchen. In this workshop\, participants will explore two magic elements in poetry — history and word play – and experiment with them to write their own poems. \nNote: Participants might consider using the poem they begin in this workshop as content for the artist’s book we’ll make in a later workshop. \nSpecial Guest Instructor: Cindy Hunter Morgan \nClass Fee: $35.00 \nPre-registration is required for this class. \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549616717397 \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:The Art of the Letter
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we’ll read examples of the epistle – poems written as letters to others – and then write our own letter poems or letter prose poems. The epistle allows a writer to engage in something that feels like a private exchange. The result can be delightful for both writer and reader. Epistolary poems feel intimate. When we read them we feel like we’re eavesdropping. Pre-registration for this class is required. \nNote: Participants might consider using the poem they begin in this workshop as content for the artist’s book we’ll make in a later workshop. \nClass Fee: $35.00 \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549655633797 \n  \n  \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Compression & Intensity: Short Story Prose
DESCRIPTION:We’ll read some powerful and delightful examples of very short prose\, and we’ll think about what a vessel the size of a paragraph can hold. Maybe you’ll create a map or a list. Maybe you’ll write a tiny essay. \nNote: Participants might consider using this as content for the artist’s book we’ll make in a later workshop. \nClass Fee: $35.00 \nPre-registration required for this class. \nREGISTER ONLINE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/549685643557 \n  \n \n
