DESCRIPTION:Get up close and personal is Michigan’s native species!  \nJoin us at the Hessel School House on Saturday\, August 17 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM for a unique and interactive experience at the Michigan Native Species LIVE Exhibit. Come face-to-face with some of the fascinating wildlife that call Michigan home. Explore live Michigan-native turtles\, snakes\, frogs\, and salamanders. Learn about their behavior\, ecology\, and conservation. Enjoy a feeding frenzy as you fee these creatures and watch how they eat. The first 100 attendees will receive a complementary workbook to take notes about the animals they view during their visit. Admission for this event is by donation thanks to a grant from the Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District. Pre-registration is not required. \n

DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend a Program and Exhibition of the McKenney & Hall Native American Lithograph Portraits from the Michilimackinac Historical Society Collection on Thursday\, August 29 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Hessel School House. \nThomas L. McKenney was the Superintendent of Indian Affairs at the time of President Andrew Jackson’s endorsement of the Indian Removal Act in 1830. He witnessed the mass displacement of Native American tribes from their homelands. Together with James Hall\, McKenney initiated a project to document the likeness and biographies of 125 Native American chiefs\, orators and translators who engaged in territorial negotiations with the U.S. Government during this time. The project was titled “History of the Indian Tribes of North America” and the Michilimackinac Historical Society has a complete set that will be featured in the new Straits Cultural Center in St. Ignace. \nCome enjoy complimentary beer\, wine\, soft drinks and light snacks while you view the artwork prior to the presentation.\nHear updates about the Straits Cultural Center construction progress! \nDoor Prizes include: McKenney & Hall notecards\, one McKenney & Hall framed portrait\, and the book “Thomas L.
