Get Involved

There are a number of ways you can be involved with the Hessel School House that can make a lasting impact.

Make a Donation

The Hessel School House Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that supports the beloved historic landmark and the Avery Arts and Nature Learning Center, with both serving as the centerpiece of the Les Cheneaux Islands community by sustaining its remarkable heritage, stimulating the continued vitality of its residents, and preserving the incredible world of nature that envelops the area.

Although our Board and a strong core of volunteers continue to make every effort to sustain the Hessel School House and Avery Learning Center through event rental income, seeking grants, and annual fundraising, like most non-profits, there is always a critical need for additional funding for developing new programs and meaningful improvements.

Please know that any size gift is essential and will be appropriately utilized and recognized. With your gift, you ensure that we can sustain our mission to inspire and enrich lives through arts and nature.

Memorial Brick Campaign

Our ongoing, engraved-brick campaign to fund the upgrading of the landscaping and prospective gardens is one of the most meaningful and timeless ways to make a memorial gift.

The bricks are available in two sizes:
$100 (4×8) – up to 3 lines, 20 spaces per line
$250 (8×8) – up to 6 lines, 20 spaces per line.

If you donate one thousand dollars, your gift may be recognized through a memorial plaque placed along the garden walkway.

Memorial and Honorarium

A gift made in memory of a person or in honor of an individual or an event — including an anniversary or milestone — is a meaningful way to provide an enduring tribute to someone or something significant in your life while supporting the mission of Hessel School House.

Bequest

A bequest to the Hessel School House can take the form of cash, securities, real estate, or other assets. Any size bequest is greatly appreciated by the Hessel School House and helps further our work. A bequest reduces the size of your taxable estate. Therefore, the cost of your bequest may be offset by a reduction in state and federal death taxes. Seek the advice of your financial planner to assist you with making a bequest.

Retirement Plan Assets

Assets such as 401(k)s, 403(b)s and IRAs may be subject to high tax rates, which make them ideal for charitable giving. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Hessel School House pays no taxes on your gift, allowing your entire gift to support our work.

In-Kind Gifts

Many types of assets other than cash can be donated to Hessel School House. Here is a wish list of items that are needed and could be considered an In-kind Gift.

  • Outdoor enclosed bulletin board for north entry
  • Antique or fine reproduction hightop table to hold guest book
  • Portable A/C unit
